How I’ll resurrect the magazine industry

Magcloud is a cool wee website that allows you to create a magazine of your own making. All very Web 2.0 and long tail but very clever. I’m planning my first publication that when published is sure to be a winner. It will be carefully be left randomly around homes to give that air of sophistication and wit.

I present: furniture porn monthly! It’s like it is 2000 all over again.

What The Big Idea?

BBC Four have been showing a series of advertising related programmes to coincide with the broadcasting of Mad Men here in the UK. I’ve been loving a programme called The Hard Sell which is all about the promotion of selling certain products. The first one I saw was about promoting Cigarettes and Alcohol. Really interesting to see old ads that are part of you from the seventies and eighties. It also makes me love YouTube all the more as I can get to see these ads again.

But the big thing for me was when will there be the big idea for Internet advertising? Yes the nature of the advertising space is nowhere near the same the programme should just how bad the first TV ads were. You could say the same for most Internet ads. When will online media not mimic TV or film? What will a true Internet ad look like? Is this the best that we have? What will be the breakthrough moment that will define the media with the potential as an art form. Where’s our Guiness ad?

Just what I always wanted

Lovely heads at Kelvingrove Muesum

I saw today a list of features, benefits if you will, for a Dyson vacuum cleaner. It listed very highly a ‘fast start up time’. I have never, ever started a vacumm and thought, ” That was a bit slow to start”.

I’m obviously thinking about it too much. How slow is too slow? I pondered this while looking at the heads above.

Olivia is off for a week and while we’re hoping that she’ll have great break that is throughly deserved we don’t know how’ll we cope without her. Have a great time and see you when you return.

Missing booze

After a good night out last night with some great clients (turns out I’m a handbag.com kind of guy) I decided to walk for a wee bit and ended up at Anniesland Cross so I could take a picture of the sign for the Ministry of Booze.

However in a painfully brilliantly masterstroke some one has nicked the ‘Booze’ part of the sign. I still took the picture while all the time blaming students for pinching half of my favourite shop sign. I have no idea if it was students of course but it seems like the thing I would do when I was a student.

Two Months

I can’t apologise enough to myself for not writing. I’ve missed it, I really have. It’d about the time and time is one thing that I’ve not had a lot off recently due to work and other interests. I’m off next week with the kids which will be great, I’m planning to bury my work phone in the garden.

Got my new iPhone after a trial of great patience, esp in the awful Carphone Warehouse in Buchanan Galleries. They sowed me my box, started the process, told me that it was the last one in the shop, let me hold the box then at the last minute they took it away saying that someone had reserved it. Which actually was against the whole policy of selling the iPhone. I went men-tal. I waited until the manager told me that he had just given me terrible service, That took five minutes alone, he would only apologise but not telling me why. Once he said it I then went to an O2 shop and waited 45 minutes to get my new phone. It was painful but that’s the cost of being a fanboy.

I will write more, I’ve lots to write about and I will do more. Promise.

Value

Boom!

What is value and how do you measure it in a world that is all about the free? Or at least getting the free? Free everything on the Internet. I have a friend that has over 500 albums downloaded from the Internet. That she’s never listened to. So while she has something it has no value so therefore no interest.

I have another friend who is now only buying music now. He had a huge library of downloaded free/stolen/liberated music but didn’t invest the time to listen, really listen, to his music. Therefore the it had no meaning.

Now he’s only getting music from iTunes. It’s not having the physical that’s important to him. It’s the fact that he is investing in his own enjoyment by paying for something he cares about. That’s where he’s finding the value.
