Sofa

I’m thinking about doing a wee project but it may impact on my holiday. In case I do decide to do it I’d be interested in your sofa, what it means to you and why you choose the one you have. If you have any pictures of it that’s be useful too. Thanks. I’ll let you know if I decide to move on the project…

  1. My sofa is a piece of crap and i regret getting it in the first place(whispering so sofa doesn’t hear in the next room…just kidding…sort of). It’s not as bad as a “Brady Bunch” couch from the 70’s, but a close runner up, hence not having a picture of it and not wanting a picture either. I just am too lazy and it’s not the top priority right now to replace it with something better until i move into a nicer place in town. -Kathleen

  3. My sofa cost more than most people’s cars. I bought it on credit. I feel guilt and love in equal measure. We live on it. It is our home.

  5. OK truth be told I chose my sofa (both style and color) to match the large oil painting on the wall behind it. It has all the colors of the painting mixed in a lovely plaid pattern. I like my sofa cushions firm and the sofa length long so a person 6 ft. tall can stretch out on it to nap without having to curl their knees. My sofa is a Marshfield brand. Here’s a picture:

  7. Given you are appreciate what 800087355 means … PLUS I think I know what your project is … I can tell you the best thing about my sofa is that when I lie down, it doesn’t fall all around me - it stands firm, protecting yet comforting me while I relax and let the yuck of the day fall off me.

    How can it do this?

Well mainly because it has more stitches holding it together than errrrrm something that has alot of stitches holding it together.

I could have gone cheap … but a sofa is a statement of how you live to the outside World and while I am a slouchy fuck behind closed doors, I like to give the impression I’m not a total neanderthal when we have visitors, ha!

[Theres a clue in that statement!]

  9. I’m a dog lover and a sofa napper. Plus, my dear hubby snores, so I sometimes wind up sleeping on it all night. My sofa looks half-dead. It has been mightily abused, as we abuse all sofas. As for looks, I really don’t care that much. I want durability and comfort in equal measure, and I would love to have a classic oxblood leather one with brass tacks. But since we love dogs, I doubt that will happen. At any rate, no one sees the damned thing anyway. We let our dogs get on the sofa, so it’s always got a cover of some sort on it, usually a bed sheet with a high thread-count to keep the dog hair from weaving into the fabric. And it was worse when we still had our ferret, who burrowed into the side of our former sofa. Add four grandkids to the mix and use your imagination. Or I’ll save you the trouble: it’s a worn southwestern-type monstrosity that hopefully will be replaced in the near future. Sofas are, to me, the most important furniture in the living room because we do live on it.

  11. Wow, it’s wonderful that choosing a seemingly simple household item, in this case a sofa, and people can relate an interesting story.

Sorry I can’t help you with this; I sit on the floor a la Japanese fashion. I have no idea what your project is about Steelso, but this site has been on my “favourites” for some time and your blog made me think of it again. Scroll through for some interesting street-sofa characters.

  13. okay. Long story about our sofa. We finally decided to invest in a VERY NICE one from one of those high end furniture places, our first really nice sofa. We had someone looking for us, found one, and we went to check it out. It’s one of those big, wide sofas with big cushions plus pillows. If you sit all the way back your feet don’t touch the floor. So, my husband is all about how it feels. “I’ll know it when I sit on it”, he says. He sits. He’s not too sure about it. Thinks it’s not quite right. So, we proceed to go to every other sofa store in town (it felt like it anyway) and sit on every sofa in town. Each time he says, ” nope. this isn’t it.” I’m about done with it. It so happens we are heading to a party close to the original sofa store and he says, “let’s stop by and check on that one sofa we tried first.” I’m thinking how ridiculous this is since he didn’t like it the first time. So, we go in, he heads straight for that sofa, lays down and proclaims, “this is it!” I say, “You have got to be kidding!”. Well, long story long, we have that sofa, we love it, and all 4 of us can fit in it. It’s the best sofa in the world….
If you get serious about the project, I may be able to find a picture….

  15. I’ll wager mine’s the oldest. I inherited mine. My sofa is part of a more traditional 3 piece suite. (People just have sofas these days and instead of getting armchairs to go alongside it, they get another sofa. It’s funny how fashions dictate what we buy) It originally belonged to my Great Grandparents, who were before my time. They bought it in the 20’s, then my Great Aunt took it on, and now I’ve got it. God!, it sounds more like a vintage car when you talk about it like that. It’s bearing up no’ bad for something approaching the best part of 100 years! I much prefer the word Sofa to Couch, don’t you? Although by my very nature I’m not the jealous sort, it does amaze me the contempt that can arise from someone getting to the sofa before me. Very interesting idea Stewart. I have a poor quality phone photo which I’ll attempt to attach to this. I hope you pursue this and I’d certainly be interested to see the finished product. What do you think about your sofa? not seen you in ages. ‘Hope you’re well.

  17. Sofa time didn’t work for me, sorry. I was on holiday and had to look after a lovely, though very ill, person. But I did actually love reading your tales. And I know now never to site on Mr Sneddon’s couch. Sorry, sofa.

    Thank you all. Really.
