Friday

All started off well, I went for some tea at the Hallion with Debs, Brian, Topher and Johnny. I had a great slab of meat with some lovely creamed spinach that Brian kindly shared. It was lovely and a great start to the evening. And a lovely bottle of wine there too. Sweet.

Then off to see C-90 at the Arches. I as surprised as I thought this was a stand up but it was a little bit of theatre. And it was beautiful. I can’t really go into what it was about, I can’t really remember. I laughed and felt sad and felt happy and felt that I had no idea what had happened at the end but I was elated that I had seen it. I want to see it again. I loved the fact that one of the characters decided to be a lollipop lady rather than a lawyer as she could then save the lives of thirty children a day. A thoughful, moving, funny, wonderfully performed show.

Couple of G&T’s after the show then it was time to take the five minute stroll to Barfly to see Beecake. Earlier in the evening I had a chat with Topher about the fear of seeing a friend’s band. What if it’s pish? What if you hate the music? What if? And then you have to see them and have to give the honest answer to the question,”What do you think?”.

I needn’t have worried. The guys we’re great, for me they really kicked in around the song “I’m Sorry”. It was brilliant to be there. I jumped along with the best of them. Also got to see some people I haven’t seen in a while which was great too, esp. the lovley Mark. What a surprise, what a treat.

After the boys finished I spent some time talking to people, went “backstage” (silly little room) and passed on my congratulations to the guys and talked about me being a roadie in LA for them. Which would be hilarious. Have to learn to tune guitars though…

Talked to some peeps, esp the people who came from Japan for the gig. They were lovely and very sweet. I wasn’t sure who was more excited about being there, them or me. It was good to meet fans that are fans rather than hiding in fucking forums being nasty and cruel about people that they haven’t met and don’t know. Scared, sorry little fuckers. Anyway…..

Then off back to the Hallion to drink and laugh. Billy, Mark, Aude and Ali came up after and we had a right good chat about the gig, the importance of stories and how you tune guitars. I’m also getting my Garage Band lesson soon too. Turns out my camera works just fine when I’m pissed too. Good camera, good.

I got a bus home. At 3.15am. That was weird, I don’t usually get a bus home at 3.15am. All good.

  3. i *so* love it when you have a camera in your hands…!! have i mentioned…?

great to get such excellent reviews of the band first hand, pics as well. i understand your nervousness about the watching of a good friend’s band. similar to watching lotr for the first time…high expectations- you anticipate it being good, you *want* it to be good, and until you see it for yourself, it’s all “eek”. was totally checking the clock here…thinking good thoughts for them. happy they were brilliant…glad you had a great time!! i think everyone did.
so…they *are* coming then…? to burbank? really really?

annndd…did you learn how to tune guitars…? like, to help them backstage at burbank then…?

    just …you know…curious…

    *hugs*

  5. What night did you see C-90? I saw it last week, I think it was Wednesday night(?) I don’t think you were there…

I loved it. I thought it was fantastically written, and I wondered if I could ever write anything that profound and moving. Daniel Kitson is really a lovely guy, it’s too bad I only got to speak to him for a couple of minutes before he went off to Edinburgh.

    Hopefully see you soon

  7. You had a full night! I’m so glad you thought the guys were good. At this point, I’m only going to get to hear them on MySpace or a CD as crappy Creation Entertainment canceled ELF in Chicago and a good number of us were hoping to have Billy and Beecake there. I’m trying to save the money to come to Scotland this fall, so have none to go to L.A. for ORC. I’ll be hopping they have a gig in Scotland the week of 24 - 28 Sept.

Sounds like you’re thoroughly sick of forums. I know you’ve seen way too much of the shit that can end up happening on them. There are lots of real fans out there, but most of us can’t afford to fly all over the place to go to gigs. I’m hoping that Beecake will have a home gig 24 - 28 September. As mentioned above, a few of us are going to be in Scotland for a get together at Carbisdale Castle in Sutherland and it would be fantastic to come hear the guys live, especially as those of us going to the Scotland gig can’t make it to L.A.

I’ll ask, though I’m sure it’s totally out of our range, but, would they like a gig in Carbisdale Castle? How much do they charge? ;-) But seriously, I think some of us could make it to Glasgow if they had a gig that week, and I’d love to show my friends around the city.

You’ll have a blast with Garage Band!

    hey, I already can tune a guitar…maybe I can be a roadie??

oh wait. roadies don’t get paid.

    do they?

  11. loved your pics…glad your camera worked! LOL! Looks like you had a great time. I am glad that you were there to support your friends…and that it all turned out so well!! : )
Sorry about the forum experience…sounds icky! Not much experience there myself…and it sounds like I don’t want to start! : )
Good luck on learning to tune guitars…I’m sure the guys would have a blast with you as a roadie. LOL.
    Cheers!

  13. I’m one of the people going to Scotland on the dates Pearl mentioned. Our numbers are growing, and most are fans who would happily go to a gig. So I do hope they can manage one while we’re there.

“It was good to meet fans that are fans rather than hiding in fucking forums being nasty and cruel about people that they haven’t met and don’t know. Scared, sorry little fuckers. Anyway…..”

Amen, sweetie, and mmmm-hmmmm, Amen! Cowards, bullys, just mongrels that nip at the heels of purebreeds. Me, I point and laugh at them. I may not know or ever have met those wonderful people, but everyone I’ve spoken to that have been so fortunate to meet and speak with them say they are both very lovely people, and I hear so much that Ali is a real sweetie. I have a buddy (a sister Bean Girl) that lives in Glasgow, and the word there is that both are wonderful, wonderful people. And I, among many more than you can guess, am very happy for them both. The 27th of this month is the 35th anneversary of our wedding. I’m still so much in love with my man. I hope the pair of them remain as deeply in love as I still am with my husband.

Thank you so very much for the pics. You’re so sweet to share them with us! And I’m thrilled that the music is just so darn good! I wanted so badly to like Billy’s tune-age. When I heard it, all my fears vanished like fog in the sun. I was vindicated in my belief that he could do Pippin so perfectly, and I am also vindicated in my belief that he can make such a joyful and ass-kicking noise. Billy and Beecake rocks well and truly. I really love Soul Swimming. There’s a couple of places in that one that sounds almost Beatlesque. I went nuts for Kick the Door. Rip It Up rocked my world. Friends and Lovers tied my heart in a little knot. Guess I’ll never outgrow my love of good hard ass-kicking rock.

    Thanks again, and…
    Shine on, you crazy diamond!

Glad you had a great Friday. Sounds like a grand time was had by all!
Hope you have more time to meet more fun fans, possibly this March, if you have the time. Sure, there are the occasional bad guys, but most of us are good people just looking to have fun, to be little silly sometimes, and who greatly appreciate the gentle patience shown us by the objects of our attentions. The others are few and far between, they just kick up a lot of dust.

  17. OK, so I’m blind. I kept wondering about these pics people kept commenting about. I knew I HAD to be missing something. I got a new monitor yesterday and, lo and behold, I could see the link for them. Finally! The camera seems to work well, despite the sobriety of the operator. Or maybe that’s because of. Whatever… Thanks for sharing them with us.

I hope you do get a chance to come to LA in March. Gene and I would love to say hi again and ply you with liquor. I know that’s such a hardship for a Scotsman like yourself, but I’m sure you’ll make the sacrifice. We’re trying like hell to be there, but we still won’t know for a while. *keep fingers crossed*

  19. THAT’s why I don’t belong to any forums (except bbloonscharities.net which is a nice forum with nice people, who do nice things for others, are nice to each other, and who say nice things about others). I am just not strong enough for regular forums, I guess. I dislike gossip, I dislike fangirlishness, I dislike ass-kissers. Ok…I have to calm down now. This isn’t my blog where I can rant and rave. Deep breath…….*whew*

Pics are great! Thanks for sharing. Looks like your new camera works wonderfully.

  21. Thanks for sharing, the pictures were great! I was also relieved at how great Billy and Beecake was (is). Can’t wait to see them live in Burbank! Hadn’t expected to go to ORC this year, but no way could I pass up this chance to see Beecake!

And those forums? *sigh* All I can say is… some peoples kids!

  23. Thanks so much for sharing the pics! There are awsome….your camera does work well drunk! Or was that you? I really appreciate the pics as I, sadly, will not be flying over the pond any time soon. I have enough trouble trying to type this message with a 2 yr old pulling on my arm and a 6 yr old saying “can we play now, can we play now, can we play now…”…you get the picture…. I will have to live vicariously through others **sigh**

  27. First can I wave my white flag and say I’m sorry, again.
Second thanks for the pics. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be so focused at that time of the morning with any amount of alchemahol in my system. I have a photobucket account if you ever want to see my pics.
Third I’ve been finding out that fandom in general can be very negative in some aspects. There are folks that prey on other fans. They make them selves look good at first and once your in their clutches you find out what kind of snakes they can be. I was conned but I admit I should have been more aware and I let it go to far. I’ve lost a lot more than my dignaty. I lost friends as well as my confidence. I want to thank you for speaking out because if you bring about their downfall, maybe you’ll save some one else from what happened to me.

  29. Hi,Stewart.
I went to Glasgow (from Japan) to see the gig and talked you on 26 January.
I was glad to see you!
    It was great night!

Thanks so much sharing the pictures!

  31. Hi Stewart, thanks for linking us to your blog. I like these pages - they’re nice and “clean” and not crammed with ads.

Just read about your new MacBook - I had been under the impression Macs had always been your thing. I bought one for the first time late last year (just the shiny white version, but custom 80Gig Hard Drive and 1 gig of RAM, yum). It has caused me some troubles, but overall I’m enjoying it. Love iPhoto.

I can’t afford to come to Scotland but I’m honesty aching to go back, I would be a true fan of Beecake if I had the money…

To those going to Carbisdale Castle - I can tell you about my “ghostly” encounter there if you would like to hear it…but it is a lovely place.
