Cool Ecosse?
We’re doing a wee project at work just now about Scotland and its cool factor. Does it have cool, is it a good or bad thing to have cool and what makes a country cool? Is it the arts that make a place cool, the people, the ‘vibe’? What is the vibe? All this has come from our Executive (the Scottish parliment) announcing Scotland as the ‘best small country in the world‘. Although others could say different…
Any thoughts?

From Moi? I’m not qualified to give any thoughts, because I’ve never been to Scotland. But if you look at it from a business perspective then, a lot of business’ offer the same services, it is the manner in which they offer them that counts. The same with a country, I suppose; I would focus on the character of Scotland’s greatest natural resourse…its people. Let’s face it, all countries have distinct historical, ecological and social attributes But what stands out in a tourist’s mind is the hospitality of a country. The welcome graces make all the difference in the world.
Just my opinion, but then, what do I know?
ummmm what makes a country cool? A uniqueness. A combination of people, arts, history and architecture. Scotland has all that. I loved the experience. Scotland is very cool.

Tough question, there. Is it cool? Define cool. According to what I read in both links y’all might have a little duality. Or a lot.
See, I know one thing that is not, and I mean not cool, and that’s attempting to define the people of a certain place when you really don’t know that much about those people. And here we are with the duality thing again. Scotland, by all accounts (second hand but soon to be remedied) is both. It sounds like a cool place with room for improvement, just like any cool place.
Kind of like the south with racism, you see. Racism is a problem which has been a plague on mankind all over the world since the beginning of recorded history, but no thanks to certain individuals and occurrances, it’s always convienint to play it with a southern drawl. In spite of this fact the south now enjoys fewer racial hate crimes than the rest of the United States according to the FBI. Is there still racism? Of course, just like anywhere else. That doesn’t take away from the enormous strides taken in the past and the present, or those that will be taken in the future. Such is the duality of the southern thing, which is…you guessed it…both a blessing and a curse.
Now, as I said earlier, I’ve not yet been to Scotland, but I have been giving it a long and intense study for the last ten or eleven years. From what I see and read, y’all got it going on. The main thing is keeping your head up and looking forward without forgetting about the past. Such is the duality of the duality thing. Again, a blessing and a curse. Either way, I still admire your country and still plan on visiting it, as much for her people and her present as for her geography and her past. I admire Scotland for it’s will to survive and it’s will to thrive. Your people are distinctive without being insular (again, there’s duality) and that’s always cool.
